West SILC Powerhouse (16 to 19 years)

The Powerhouse is the post‑16 provision for West SILC. It supports young people aged 16 to 19.

At the Powerhouse, each student follows a learning journey called the Foundation Learning Programme. This programme helps students build skills for adult life.

Learning focuses on two main areas:

  • Learning to Live – skills for everyday life
  • Learning to Earn – skills for work and employment

Students learn through real‑life activities. Staff practise situations that students may face now and in the future. Students also spend time out in the community to help them use their skills in different places.

Students are grouped by ability, not by age. Learning activities are planned to meet each student’s individual needs.

Each week, students usually have:

  • three days of taught lessons
  • two days of life skills, personal and social learning, or work experience

This support helps students grow in confidence, independence, and readiness for adulthood.
